Employees of the 4 Écluses and local residents are commissioning a work to highlight a little island at the heart of the town, its architectural heritage and its natural surroundings.
The 4 Écluses music venue is situated on this artificial island at the centre of which stands a historic building – a 17th-century gunpowder store, one of the few structures in the area to have survived both world wars. This remarkable piece of heritage has largely gone unnoticed by local residents and the local authorities. Enhancing the site would provide the opportunity to showcase this unique building. Furthermore, by remaining uninhabited, the island has become a green oasis, rich in biodiversity, a rarity in the city centre.
Situated between several neighbourhoods, the island is an often-overlooked, under-valued part of the town. The commissioning group hopes to give people a new reason to visit, to talk about it and to make it a hub for social interaction and community life. Their goal is to showcase its remarkable qualities and reveal the vibrant cultural activity and the animal and plant life that flourishes there.
