Members of the Queer Education association commissioned a designer to create an inclusive sporting event.
The Queer Education association seeks to reaffirm education as the most effective and lasting means of combating all forms of discrimination. While collective sports can serve as vehicles for emancipation, they equally have a tendency reproduce structures of exclusion, particularly with regard to body types perceived as vulnerable. For young people, practicing a sport plays a crucial role in shaping their identities, as well as in the implicit learning of pre-determined models of group behaviour.
Members of the association sought to commission a sporting event that would challenge the codes traditionally associated with the values of sport. The designer Gabriel Fontana who was selected to respond to this commission, develops an artistic practice that use sport as a vehicle for fostering empathy. The games he creates thereby address a range of pressing issues that shape contemporary society, from the construction of social bonds to questions of identity and inclusion.
Gabriel Fontana designed the project En Jeu. Created in the context of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this project invites secondary school and higher education students from Seine-et-Marne to explore the theme of sport, paying particular attention to its social dimension. Working collaboratively, the students designed and developed new team sports, which were subsequently presented in the form of a tournament at La Ferme du Buisson.
The project raises fundamental questions: What values are embodied in sport? Must sport always be equated with performance? In what ways does sporting achievement mirror the ethos of a competitive society? And how might reimagining our relationship to sport open possibilities for reshaping our relationship to the wider world? Through a process at once thought-provoking and educational, the tournament aimed to engage with these issues, offering a space for both critical reflection and creative exploration.
